Recycled Grand Prix banners, acrylic, on recycled canvas.
As the scent of the banners filled my studio, I was met with the question of how I was going to turn them into art. I experimented with several approaches—cutting them into confetti for texture building, using them in collage, stuffing them with packing peanuts for dimension, even running them through a paper shredder (which actually created a really cool effect I plan to use).
The idea for this piece came to me back in November. I bounced it around with a few friends to figure out how to execute it in a way that felt true to my work. I knew I didn’t want the banners to just be background material—I wanted them to become a sculptural extension of the acrylic textures I already use in my paintings.
This piece blends sculptural cuts from the banners with acrylic texture, layered intentionally to stay true to my practice — rooted in movement, shadow, and resilience.
It’s a reminder that creation often starts with chaos.
And from that, something new can still emerge.
