"Banner Jerky"

12"x19"

Recycled Grand Prix banners on recycled canvas.

Last in the Grand Prix banner series… I think?

As an artist, I often ask myself, "Have I made it?" "Am I seen?"

I’ve never felt more visible than I do as an artist—laying my struggles, ideas, and vulnerabilities out into the world for others to interpret, appreciate, or critique. Over time, I’ve taken on project after project, trying everything once (twice if I liked it). I’ve created multiple curation sites to uplift the careers of other artists and developed badge programs that help Girl Scouts embrace their creativity and confidence.

And now… maybe I have made it—just not in the way people often think.

People often assume success as an artist means wealth, but the truth is, I’m lucky if I cover my studio rent each month. What matters more is that I love the grind. I love the process. And I believe deeply in turning around to help the next person in line.

For this piece, I experimented with a new approach I called “banner jerky.” I ran strips of Grand Prix banners through a paper shredder—sometimes more than once—then ripped, twisted, folded, and layered them until they transformed into sculptural textures. The final effect reminded me of all the beef jerky I’ve eaten in my life—tough, weathered, and full of grit.

Just like these banners.

Just like this journey.
